Bloomfield Public House: A Neighbourhood Favourite Reopens

There’s some hot news buzzing around the neighbourhood of Bloomfield…and that is the Bloomfield Public House is back in business after a hiatus of a couple years. Chef Elliot Reynolds and sommelier Laura Borutski are the husband-and-wife team behind Bloomfield Public House, which has been, since its inception, a prominent part of Prince Edward County’s exciting food scene.

Regular visitors to Bloomfield will remember the couple from their original establishment, The Hubb Eatery & Lounge located at Angeline’s Inn, where they built a loyal following over five years by focusing on the basics of providing excellent food and service.

Having decided it was time to take a break, their plans changed when the historic building at 257 Bloomfield Main Street, which had formerly been a bank, unexpectedly became available. Attracted by the combination of history and potential, they purchased it and transformed it into Bloomfield Public House, which opened in late 2018.

Quickly the restaurant established itself as a local favourite, developing a reputation for its “rural cookery.” Chef Reynolds describes their approach as creating sophisticated yet approachable dishes using seasonal, locally sourced ingredients. Laura Borutski, as the sommelier and front-of-house manager, ensures a warm and welcoming atmosphere, frequently making guests feel like they are at home.

When the COVID-19 pandemic presented challenges, Chef Reynolds and Laura adapted by turning the restaurant into a market offering fresh food to go and essential groceries, supporting both their business and the needs of the local community. Their resilience and community commitment have solidified their place as significant figures in Prince Edward County’s food culture.

To popular acclaim, Bloomfield Public House has now reopened with a refreshed “industrial chic” interior and a new menu, served on antique mismatched crockery imparting a shaby-chic vibe to the atmosphere. The focus has always been to use what is available locally, creating dishes from Prince Edward County’s dedicated, hardworking producers. With the menu, “we wanna have fun,” says Laura, “We are constantly bringing new ideas and flavours to our plates, whilst also retaining some of our stand out dishes on the menu, such as shucked oysters, charred cabbage, roasted half bird, steak frites, a tartare or a crudo just a name a few. For the wine list we love using local wineries, as well as some great international brands, we create fun and creative cocktails, and offer local beers and ciders on tap.”
